    Remembering Hugh Crail

It is with sadness we heard of the passing of Hugh Crail

Although it is many years since he was involved in Orienteering in South Africa, he will be remembered as one of the pioneers of the sport here.

His excellent map of Moffat Park, which was first used for the Transvaal Champs in 1984 remains an excellent example of early mapping in Johannesburg.  In fact most of the map is still usable today as the area has changed very little over the past 27 years – one of the few areas in Johannesburg (along with Delta Park and Alberts Farm) which have remained fundamentally unchanged.

Hugh will also be remembered for his involvement in the Bateman’s events which were always tough.

However, he will probably be best remembered for being the winner of the first ever Wally award, the story of which is told on many occasions even today.

Our thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.
